Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered outside the gate. Therefore, let us go forth to him outside the camp, bearing his reproach. For we have no continuing city here, but we seek one to come.

From one of Pastor John’s Old Testament classes, June 27, 2004.
The holy Ghost is poison – to the “old man”. Paul called man’s ungodly nature, the “old man”, and he called the new nature that we receive from God through the Spirit the “new man”. The Spirit of God is poison to the old man, and he avoids it at all costs; it will kill the old man, and he will do anything to make an excuse not to receive it. He will even invent a whole new religion to make himself look righteous; he will beat himself with whips in the name of God, he will wear ridiculous looking clothes in public, he will give enormous amounts of money, but he will not repent and receive the holy Ghost. He will not drink the poison.
Go ahead. Drink your portion of the poison today. Paul drank it every day, and then he joyously declared, “I die daily!” When the old man is dead, you live with Christ in spirit, and you are happy about it.
