Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered outside the gate.  Therefore, let us go forth to him outside the camp, bearing his reproach.  For we have no continuing city here, but we seek one to come.

True Fasting, response

Pastor John:

When I was cleaning out my closet Sunday, I listened to an old radio broadcast that Haskell was importing onto the computer. It was so good! You were talking about being “filled” with the Spirit. You said that sometimes when a person would come for prayer, you would get more of a blessing and more of a touch from God than the person you were praying for. But then, you asked God to not let you be blessed like that but for Him to pass that blessing on to that person who was needing the touch. You said that pretty soon, you found yourself having more love of God for people and more compassion for people than you’d ever had before. In that sermon, you said that this is true fasting, a spiritual fasting, when you would rather someone else have the blessing than yourself. That was so good to me! There was a lot of good food on that tape!

Hi Sister Cris:

Yes, I remember that, even though it was from many years ago now. I can remember refusing to be blessed when I was praying for someone else needing a blessing, and asking God to give that blessing to them. And I remember the effect of that prayer was a great increase in the love of God in me for others. That was a true fast on my part that accomplished good in my soul, and it seemed to help others as well, which was the point.
